3 top tips on when to replace your kitchen cabinets

10 Jul

Your kitchen cabinets are definitely the main feature of your kitchen - the overall look of your space is usually down to the style of the doors and drawers. If you have had your kitchen cabinets installed for a number of years, it may be time for a change.

Here are three top tips on when you should be replacing your kitchen cabinets:

1. Sun and water damage

It goes without saying that the longer you have your kitchen cabinets, the more likely they will encounter sun or water damage. Constant direct sunlight and water leaks can have an impact on drawers and doors, most often making them difficult to open and close. This is down to swelling, especially if your cabinets are made from wood - it can easily be damaged and unfortunately won't last forever.

You should particularly look out for your cabinets going soft - if this is the case, the likelihood is that they will fall apart fairly soon. In most cases, kitchen cabinets can last up to ten years, but may need replacing sooner.

2. Wear and tear

As with any furniture, your kitchen cabinets will experience wear and tear in the form of chips, dints, dents and stains - of course, this is to be expected, due to your kitchen being heavily used on a daily basis.

Whilst some may consider repairs rather than replacement in this instance, the more repairs that are needed, the more expenses you will face. Often, it is better value for money to bite the bullet and invest in a new kitchen.

3. Trends

If you purchased your cabinets some years ago, the chances are that your kitchen decor is now completely out of sync with current trends for contemporary kitchens. Kitchens become outdated fairly quickly, especially if you opted for a bold colour scheme.

On the plus side, you don't have to purchase a whole brand new kitchen: you can just change your doors and drawers to match your updated decor. However, opting for a brand new kitchen will save you money in the long-term, as you will most likely end up replacing it in the future regardless.
